Salento is the southern-most area of Puglia and Italy’s easternmost point. A region of climatic extremes and dramatic beauty, positioned between the Mediterranean’s Adriatic
and Ionian seas. This historic peninsula presents an amazing vibrant palette of colour and sensations, providing “Salento” wines with layers of aroma, flavour and depth, unique to the region.
Neil, Maria & Tara Empson had long been searching for exciting and exceptional “terroir” for a new wine project, when, along with Apulia wine identities, Valentino Sciotti and Filippo Baccalaro they discovered all the right viticulture ingredients in the dazzling landscape of Salento. The MATANE joint venture project was born and named after Maria Tara & Neil. This Empson selection of wines demonstrates Apulia’s treasure-trove of grape varietals, both indigenous and native/international combinations.
Matane Negroamaro Puglia IGT 2019
Matane Primitivo Puglia IGT 2021
Very deep ruby red with violet reflections. The intense aroma and flavours of plum, cherry, rosemary, vanilla and peppery spice are confirmed by a well balanced, full finish. This indigenous grape variety is DNA acknowledged as the fore-father of California’s Zinfandel. Matane Primitivo pairs extremely well with red meat, duck, game, smoked fish and hard cheeses.
